Vanilla is not foreign to our land — it is a Mesoamerican treasure native to Costa Rica that we chose to wake from its long sleep. But we refused to reproduce the cycles of dependency and vulnerability that have weakened this crop worldwide. We built something different: a counter-model rooted in sovereignty and shared learning — the Finca-School.
CO-CREATION & AUTONOMY
We don’t arrive with a ready-made value chain. We build it together, territory by territory, producer by producer. We provide high-quality plant material, agroecological inputs and knowledge — while learning just as much as we teach. Every farmer adapts, grows and becomes an expert capable of carrying the project forward on their own terms, without depending on Flora Nueva indefinitely.
The market for vanilla is unforgiving for those who face it alone. Four years to the first full harvest. Constant exposure to theft and speculation. Collective organization is our shield — and our strategy. Together, we build the volume and the stability needed to access markets that are truly fair.
SHARED VALUE
From the first seedling leaving our nursery to the final moment a cured pod reveals its full fragrance — every step is deliberate, meticulous and deeply collective. Vanilla curing is a four-stage ritual that we carry out with precision and care:
- Cutting: An initial thermal bath to halt the vegetative life of the pod.
- Sweating: An anaerobic sweating process in which the pod develops its color and chemical reactions come alive.
- Drying: One month of combined sun and shade drying — intense and passive, each playing its part.
- Conditioning: The final act: wooden boxes, time and stillness — where vanilla reveals its full aromatic complexity.
